What it’s really about
The relevant standards require the base to be protected against splash water and water to be carried away from the building in a controlled manner. Whether this is done via a gravel strip, a water-draining surface with a fall, or a channel with a grating is a question of execution – “the facade channel” as a component is not the goal, but one possible route.
When a solution at the base makes sense
At the latest with step-free, barrier-free transitions, floor-level doors, a low base height or in timber construction, controlled drainage at the connection becomes important. Here a loose strip is often not enough – what is needed is a defined connection that works permanently.
Some house manufacturers seal certain parts of the facade – often around the front door – in a detailed and targeted way; in that case additional rear ventilation is not needed. When in doubt, early coordination with the planner and the contractor pays off, because errors in the base connection usually entail expensive follow-up costs.
The risk of leaving it out
The actual problem is rarely normal rain, but driving rain, snow and meltwater at the threshold – where the floor covering often begins on the inside. Retrofitting after moisture damage is considerably more expensive than the solution from the outset.
The flexible alternative
Sobekon® is the walkable, barrier-free alternative to the classic facade channel: a made-to-measure grating over a generous ventilation zone, deliverable in under a week. This keeps the transition level and the base protected.
